Who would wake up at 7am on a Saturday morning to attend an event where you don’t know what will happen until you get there? Apparently 187 freelancers in Vancouver!
Freelance Camp Vancouver 2012 was a huge success. For those of you who don’t know, Freelance is an “unconference style event for independent workers to connect, share knowledge and become better freelancers.” Basically, it’s a place for small business owners to connect and share successes, failures and best practices. It was hosted by The Network Hub, and proved to be a great event.
The morning started with everyone pitching to the group about sessions they want to lead, and the crowd voted on who would present. Everyone was there from Contractually (contracts for people who hate contracts) to amazing PR and Business Coaches (including Felicia Lee) to accounting professionals, blogging gurus Owen Clark and Bosco Anothony, web designers and more.
Our Session on Inbound Marketing
The crowd vote for us to lead a session on inbound marketing, which was really fun. We were second to bat, so everyone was still fresh and keen to learn – plus we were riding our morning coffee buzz courtesy of Waves Coffee. Chris did an overview on the concepts of inbound marketing, then explained how everyone can do it using a variety of free tools. We were impressed with the questions and discussions that followed. (If you want to learn more about what Chris shared, check out our 12 Steps To Getting Customers Online guide.)
As a sponsor of the event, we also held a contest for someone to win a 1 Year Spokal Subscription. Boris Mann helped us draw the winner, and we’re proud to announce that Kayla Roxas is the lucky girl – she’ll be using Spokal to help start her consulting businesses.
Event Highlights
The best part of the event was that we also got to participate in several amazing sessions. One of our favourites was the “Top 5 Mistakes Freelancers Make” led by business coach extraordinaire Felicia Lee, where she discussed how visibility, credibility, profitability, sustainability and scalabilty are key for small business owners to succeed. We also enjoyed learning about what makes Apple a success from Norm in the afternoon session.
With free cookies from FreshBooks to finish off the day, it was a great success. We’ll definitely be attending Freelance Camp 2013, and look forward to seeing everyone there!
